It’s said that the grass is greener on the other side. Perhaps that’s because your neighbour owns a cordless grass trimmer—an essential tool for keeping a lawn in tip-top shape.
Grass trimmers perfectly complement lawnmowers and scarifiers, filling a need that no other tool can. A trimmer makes short work of long grass, cutting errant blades that grow close to walls, decks, garden beds and outdoor furniture—areas your comparatively cumbersome mower dares not tread.
Many cordless grass trimmers are well-suited to creating crisp border edges—the finishing touch on a perfect lawn—and those that pack the most power can do double-duty, whacking away at those troublesome weeds that so quickly overtake a neglected garden.
How do you go about choosing a trimmer? There are many on the market, from corded to cordless, petrol-powered to electric.
Some are large; others, small. The choices can be daunting.
That’s why we’ve pored over a vast selection of trimmers and strimmers, weeding out the worst and selecting the best rated. Now, stop letting your neighbour’s grass make you green with envy, and select from our curated list of the best cordless grass trimmers/strimmers – available today.
1. Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36 Cordless Grass Trimmer
Take charge of your lawn with the AdvancedGrassCut 36 Cordless Grass Trimmer and show that stubborn grass who’s the Bosch. Sorry folks, a bit of a yardwork pun for you there. But in all seriousness, the AdvancedGrassCut 36 by Bosch—a well-regarded power tool manufacturer—is a great all-round grass trimmer.
It’s efficient, easy to handle, and like all our recommended trimmers, cordless.
The AdvancedGrassCut 36 uses lines—durable plastic strips that resemble whips and likely inspired the term “whipper snipper”—to cut away tall grass and stubborn weeds. Dual lines double cutting power and efficiency as compared to a single-line system, and a semi-automatic feeder helps keep the 1.6-metre long line at the correct length.
Using a grass trimmer close to shrubs and other plants can be nerve-wracking—one wrong move, and the high-speed lines can damage bark and split stalks.
The Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36 Cordless Grass Trimmer largely mitigates this problem, thanks to an integrated plant protector. The large, durable plastic guard wraps around the rear and sides of the trimmer, keeping surrounding plants safe.
With a high-capacity, 36V lithium-ion battery, the AdvancedGrassCut 36 packs a punch, and recharges in a respectable 70 minutes. To maximize performance, Bosch incorporated Syneon technology—an electronic chip that monitors and intelligently controls power output.
That means greater efficiency, with the battery draw automatically adjusted to the task at hand.
Good ergonomic design, found in the position- and angle-adjustable auxiliary handle, and an extended soft-touch grip section, add comfort and control during extended use.
The wide adjustability and manageable weight—approximately 4 kg—of the AdvancedGrassCut 36 make it a great cordless grass trimmer for most users.
The Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36 is largely well-reviewed. Among the few complaints is the fact that Bosch does not include a harness—despite the inclusion of harness mounting points—and top-heaviness, due to the battery.
With a few exceptions, users found the battery life adequate for trimming normal-sized lawns, and the electric motor strong enough for most tasks, bested by petrol-powered trimmers only during difficult tasks.
Its few insignificant flaws aside, the AdvancedGrassCut 36 Cordless Grass Trimmer by Bosch is a well-thought-out tool that has its place in any garden shed, and boasts some of the best user feedback reviews.
2. BLACK+DECKER 18V Cordless 28 cm String Grass Trimmer
From BLACK+DECKER—another manufacturer of quality tools—comes the 18V Cordless String Grass Trimmer. It’s ergonomic and powerful, despite the 18-volt lithium-ion battery packing only half the juice of the aforementioned Bosch 36-volt trimmer. BLACK+DECKER’s offering deserves a closer look, so let’s dive in.
Despite utilizing a single-line system, the 18V Cordless String Grass Trimmer cuts a broad, 28-cm swath, making it easy to cover large areas quickly. And the AFS (automatic feed system) cuts down on workload, detecting string wear or breakage, and automatically feeding the correct length of new line.
It’s great to see this feature becoming widely implemented—having to manually adjust the line can be frustrating.
Like the Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36, BLACK+DECKER’s cordless grass trimmer features a power management system that increases power when necessary—trimming tough weeds, for example—and reducing consumption during light use.
Where this separated itself from the competition is the front-mounted guide wheel that allows you to trim perfectly straight lines for the most professional finish.
Longer battery life and reduced wear and tear. E-Drive Technology, featuring high-torque gears, maintains motor speed as the cutting line whips through overgrown areas at 5500 to 7400 RPM—an engineering feat made possible by the electric motor and intelligent control system.
A generously sized secondary handle—hinge-mounted on the primary handle—provides another area to grip, for greater control, increased comfort and reduced fatigue. And the telescoping tube is length-adjustable with simple twist, making the BLACK+DECKER cordless trimmer suitable for almost anyone.
These effective ergonomic features especially shine when the trimmer is used in Trim’n’Edge mode—engaged by twisting the pole, which rotates the cutting head. Use the Trim’n’Edge feature to neatly finish the edge of any lawn.
Sounds good, Any downsides?
There’s little question that BLACK+DECKER’s 18V Cordless String Grass Trimmer is a fine tool, though as with every product, it has its issues. Should you wish to purchase the model with a battery and charger—essential to the trimmer’s operation—you’ll be spending more.
The upside is that the 18V Cordless String Grass Trimmer is part of BLACK+DECKER’s 18V Lithium-Ion Battery System, in which all batteries are interchangeable.
Other complaints focus primarily on the battery itself, with some users reporting early failure. Despite that, the BLACK+DECKER 18V Cordless String Grass Trimmer has a well-deserved average 4.4 out of 5-star rating and will suit most needs.
3. Flymo Contour Cordless 24V Grass Trimmer and Edger
“Flymo”—it sounds a bit aerodynamic, doesn’t it? The Flymo Contour Cordless 24V Grass Trimmer and Edger, with its glossy orange finish and swooping lines, certainly looks the part, and it’s light, 3.4 kg weight helps it practically fly through grass—though we’d recommend not taking it airborne.
Instead, consider the Flymo Contour for quick trimming and edging tasks in small- to medium-sized yards.
Powered by a 24-volt rechargeable lithium-ion battery, Flymo’s Contour Cordless Grass Trimmer and Edger provides up to 25 minutes of cordless trimming and edging on a single charge. Its 25-centimetre working width is perfect for small and medium areas, cutting a bit narrower and tighter than BLACK+DECKER’s 18V model.
With comfortable, soft-grip primary and secondary handles—the former telescopes, and the latter is hinged and angle-adjustable—the Flymo Contour Cordless Grass Trimmer is easy to hold and operate, thanks also to weighing over half a kilogram less than the average cordless grass trimmer.
Like the BLACK+DECKER trimmer, the Flymo Contour can be converted to a lawn edger with a quick twist of the cutting head.
And a large foot pedal—smart move; you can use it with clunky boots on—easily switches the trimmer to Shrubbing mode, making it possible to use under shrubs, benches, trampolines and other low-down, awkward and difficult-to-reach areas.
It’s a clever touch, sparing the user from bending and crouching.
It’s quick, light and ergonomically designed. What’s not to like about the Flymo Contour?
There exist reports of rapidly discharging batteries with poor runtimes and short lives—and replacements don’t come cheap. Given the high overall user satisfaction, it’s possible that these batteries came from a bad batch.
Moderate battery capacity and a slightly below average cutting diameter relegate the Flymo Contour Cordless 24V Grass Trimmer and Edger to lighter tasks, at which it should perform well.
4. Bosch ART 23-18 LI Cordless Lithium Ion Grass Trimmer
Rounding out of a list of the leading cordless grass trimmers is the Bosch ART 23-18 LI. This cordless, lithium-ion powered trimmer packs a decent amount of power into a lightweight, 2.3 kg package.
It also does away with the traditional plastic lines found on most “strimmers” (string-trimmers), utilizing instead a new type of composite blade that Bosch claims lasts up to twelve times longer.
As is standard among today’s best cordless grass trimmers, the Bosch ART 23-18 is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery—in this case, providing 18 volts of uninterrupted power, without the so-called “memory effect” that plagues older battery chemistries.
The battery works with all rechargeable 18V Bosch power tools and can easily be swapped out for a fresh cell.
This isn’t the first time Bosch has experimented with plastic blades—they’ve been used on other Bosch trimmers—but the company decided to improve upon the old design, creating a larger, more durable blade.
The profile has been modified and the rigidity increased for better cutting action.
Installing the new Durablades is simple—make sure the indicator arrows face upright, and slide the blade through a slot on the bottom of the trimmer. The Durable slips into place and remains held in position.
Thoughtful ergonomic design—from the rounded primary handle and a large power switch that’s easy to press even while wearing gloves, to the hinged, adjustable auxiliary handle and height-adjustable telescopic pole—make the Bosch ART 23-18 easy to use for almost anyone.
And when it’s time to edge the borders of your lawn, just press the button located near the bottom of the trimmer and rotate the head into position.
A 23cm cutting diameter, while not the widest, is sufficient for most trimming tasks, and the 90-degree rotating cutting head and integrated plant protector make the ART 23-18 a nimble cordless grass trimmer best suited for light to moderate cutting duty in tight quarters.
Like other Bosch grass trimmers, the ART 23-18 LI’s battery and motor are controlled by a Bosch Syneon Chip that intelligently regulates output based on demand.
Just trimming a bit of grass?
The chip reduces power. Cutting through an overgrown area? Syneon senses the increased motor load and draws more heavily on the battery, ensuring consistent performance.
Nothing in life is perfect—not even the ART 23-18. As compared to a mains-powered trimmer, this lightweight offering from Bosch is a bit underpowered.
That said, for extended use, no cordless grass trimmer will match the strength and limitless runtime provided by mains-operated device.
One trades those attributes for the freedom of cordless operation—a fair sacrifice, under most circumstances. Some users found they preferred traditional, whip-style cutting lines over the new Durablade system, though most favour its ease of replacement, and report it works well when used as intended—that is, not for rough use.
If you need a lightweight, reasonably powered cordless grass trimmer, the Bosch ART 23-18 may be right for you.
How to Choose the Best Cordless Grass Strimmer
Still unsure of which cordless grass trimmer is right for you? That’s okay. There’s a lot of information to take in. Keep reading—we’ll help you find the best trimmer to get your lawn in tip-top, spring- and summer-ready shape.
Whip it Good, Whip it Real Good
Most cordless grass trimmers use whip-like plastic cutting lines. They’re tried and true, and today’s semi-automatic line feeding systems make using lines much simpler than in the past.
Dual-line trimmers generally offer more cutting power—after all, two lines are better than one—though single-line models are adequate for most uses. For those who dislike changing spools, a blade-based cordless grass trimmer may be preferable.
Cut the Cord
We favour cordless trimmers for all but the largest lawns or most intensive trimming tasks.
Though a battery adds a bit of extra weight, not having to drag a cord—whose length necessarily increases in direct proportion to the size of your yard—is liberating. Just imagine: no more worrying about loose plugs, bulky electrical leads and damaged cables!
Get a Handle on Things
Holding between even 2 and 4 kg can become tiring. That’s why you should look for features such as a large primary handle, easily depressed power button, adjustable secondary handle and telescoping pole that accommodates users of varying height and body types.
The Right Tool for The Job
For quick trimming jobs, a lighter-weight, moderately powered trimmer will suffice. For extended use, tough or wet grass, or tackling thick weeds, opt for a model with a large-capacity battery and strong motor. When in doubt, err on the side of more power.
Can’t I Just Use Garden Shears?
Sure. But a grass trimmer will surpass manual tools for all but the quickest or most delicate of tasks.
Compact, affordable, rechargeable and versatile, the best cordless grass trimmers make a great addition to any shed, where they wait, ready at a moment’s notice to put the finishing touches on your lawn.
